What Materials Laser Welding Machine Can Weld?

Sep 05, 2022

Laser welding machine has become a new industrial technology in industrial welding processing by virtue of its advantages such as fast welding speed, high precision, high efficiency, smooth and beautiful welds. Laser welding machines are now widely used, but many people do not know what materials can be welded by laser welding machines.

1. Die steel

The laser welding machine can be applied to the welding of S136, SKD-11, nak808407718738, H13, P20, w302344 and other types of die steel, and the welding effect is good.

2. Carbon steel

Carbon steel is welded by laser welding machine with good effect. The welding quality depends on the impurity content. In order to obtain good welding quality, preheating is required when the carbon content exceeds 0.25%. When steels with different carbon contents are welded to each other, the welding torch can be slightly biased to the side of low-carbon materials to ensure the quality of joints. Because the heating speed and cooling speed of the laser welding machine are very fast, when welding carbon steel. With the increase of carbon content, the weld crack and notch sensitivity will also increase. Medium and high carbon steels and ordinary alloy steels can be well laser welded, but preheating and post welding treatment are required to eliminate stress and avoid cracks.

3. Alloy steel

For laser welding of low alloy high strength steel, as long as the welding parameters are appropriate, joints with mechanical properties equivalent to those of the base metal can be obtained.

4. Stainless Steel

In general, stainless steel welding is easier to obtain high-quality joints than conventional welding. Due to the high welding speed and small heat affected zone of laser welding, the adverse effects of overheating and large linear expansion coefficient during stainless steel welding are alleviated, and the weld is free of defects such as pores and inclusions. Compared with carbon steel, stainless steel has low thermal conductivity, high energy absorption and melting efficiency, which makes it easier to obtain deep penetration narrow welds. By welding thin plates with low-power laser welding, joints with good appearance and smooth and beautiful welds can be obtained.

5. Copper and copper alloy

When welding copper and copper alloy, it is easy to cause the problems of incomplete fusion and incomplete penetration. Therefore, the heat source with concentrated energy and high power should be used together with preheating measures; When the thickness of the workpiece is thin or the structural stiffness is small, and there is no deformation prevention measures, it is easy to produce large deformation after welding, and when the welded joint is subject to large rigid constraints, it is easy to produce welding stress; When welding copper and copper alloy, it is also easy to produce hot cracks; Porosity is a common defect in copper and copper alloy welding.

6. Aluminum and aluminum alloy

Aluminum and aluminum alloy are highly reflective materials. When welding aluminum and its alloy, the solubility of hydrogen in aluminum increases sharply with the increase of temperature. The dissolved hydrogen becomes the defect source of the weld. There are many pores in the weld. During deep penetration welding, voids may appear at the root and the weld bead formation is poor.

7. Plastic

Almost all thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers can use laser welding technology. Commonly used welding materials include PP, PS, PC, ABS, polyamide, PMMA, paraformaldehyde, pet and PBT. However, some other engineering plastics such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and liquid crystal polymer can not be directly welded by laser welding technology due to their low laser transmittance. Carbon black is generally added to the underlying material so that the material can absorb enough energy to meet the requirements of laser transmission welding.

There are more than these materials that can be welded by laser welding. Laser welding can be carried out between a variety of different metals. Research shows that laser welding can be carried out between a variety of different metals such as copper nickel, nickel titanium, copper titanium, titanium molybdenum, brass copper, low carbon steel copper under certain conditions.
